What is a Pregnancy Ultrasound Scan ?
Ultrasound scans use sound waves to build a picture of your baby in the womb. They are used to:
1. Check the baby’s location(in the womb or not) .
2. Check whether you’re having more than one baby .
3. Check your baby’s size, which gives a better idea of how many weeks pregnant you are.
4. Check for any abnormality in the baby.
The ultrasound measurements can also inform your due date, which is originally calculated from the first day of your last period. Calculate risk of certain problems which are commonly encountered in pregnancy(screening tests). Detect any abnormalities The scans are painless, have no known side effects and can be carried out at any stage of pregnancy. For many women, ultrasound scans are the highlight of pregnancy, and it is very exciting to ‘see’ your baby in the womb.
Please be aware that ultrasound scans may also detect problems with the baby so try to be prepared for that information. You are expected to take an appointment for the scan at least one day prior.

There is no fixed rule on the number. Scans are done on need basis. In general the following scans are offered: Early pregnancy scan/Dating scan, NT/NB scan, Anomaly scan, Growth scan with/without colour doppler Additional scans(Fetal echocardiography, Fetal neurosonogram, Biophysical profile etc.) are offered when clinically necessary.
Kindly arrive 15min prior to appointment. No special preparation is needed for the scan. You are expected to have your meals properly and have a mildly full bladder prior to scan. In case an empty stomach or empty bladder is required, it will be conveyed to you at the time of appointment. Kindly follow universal hygiene measures.
Time required varies. Depends on the type of scan you are undergoing. It also depends on the position of the unborn baby(fetus) at the time of scan. If your baby is not in a very easy position for the ultrasound specialist to see, you may be asked to wriggle your hips, jump up and down, walk around outside or come back at another time or date.
We do appreciate that this is a special time for you and your family, however we need to be able to concentrate. All scans require a lot of concentration from the doctor performing the test. Distractions from children and multiple people in the scan room could cause them to miss important findings during the scan. To avoid disappointment for your family, friends and children please do not bring more than one person with you to the hospital.
They will not be able to sit and watch the examination throughout. Accompanying person would be allowed in the room to see the scan when the ultrasound specialist calls him/her in the room. We do not provide any childcare facilities. If you bring children to the appointment, please arrange someone to look after them during the scan. If this is the case, please do not be offended, we want to ensure the safety of you, your baby and others around you.
In most cases the ultrasound specialist will be able to tell you the results during your scan. You would get a printed report on the same day in most cases. Occasionally, you may be called another day for a repeat evaluation if the scan findings are inconclusive.
Scan photos are provided with the printed report routinely.
No, not if you don’t want to. Your decision will be respected. However it is advisable that you discuss your concerns with your treating obstetrician or ultrasound specialist as ultrasound scans have many benefits which can help in your pregnancy journey.
